Saturday is league title day for cross country teams

Whitmer runners look to win first title since 2002 behind Cousino

Saturday is league championship day for most Ohio cross country teams, including six area leagues.

The Three Rivers Athletic Conference meet will be held at Walsh Park in Fremont, where the St. Francis de Sales boys and Notre Dame girls attempt to defend their team titles from a year ago. The girls race is set for 9 a.m., the boys at 9:30 a.m.

Whitmer, led by senior defending individual boys champion Nate Cousino looks to knock off St. Francis and win its first league team title since 2002 in the former Great Lakes League.

Notre Dame’s Eagles, led by junior twin sisters Madeline and Emily Vining, who placed 1-2 in the TRAC in 2016, is favored to repeat.

The City League meet is set for Collins Park, where the girls begin at 9 a.m. and the boys at 9:45 a.m. Rogers won the 2016 boys team title, and Start captured the girls title.

Rogers’ senior Mohamed Faqi looks to defend his boys individual championship, and Bowsher senior Megan Burmeister is the defending girls champion.

The Northern Lakes League meet is scheduled for Whiteford Valley Golf Course in Ottawa Lake, Mich., beginning at 9 a.m. Perrysburg’s boys and Northview’s girls are the defending team champions. The highest returning boys finisher is Bowling Green’s Zach Applegate, who was individual runner-up in 2016, and Northview’s Jenna Kill is the defending girls champion.

Eastwood High School will be the site of the Northern Buckeye Conference meet, with the girls race starting at 10:40 a.m., and the boys race beginning at noon. Otsego swept the boys and girls team titles a year ago, and the Knights’ Shane Tobar is the defending boys individual champion. The top girls finisher back is Woodmore sophomore Faith Morris, who place second in 2016.

The Toledo Area Athletic Conference races will be held at Maumee Bay State Park, with the girls starting at 11 a.m., and the boys beginning at 11:40 a.m. Ottawa Hills won the boys team title in 2016, and Danbury was the girls team champion. Toledo Christian’s Caleb Corriea (runner-up) was the top underclassman boys finisher in 2016, and Northwood’s Trinity Fowler (second) was the top underclassman girls placer.

The Wauseon boys and Liberty Center girls look to defend their team titles in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League meet, which begins at 10 a.m. at Wauseon’s Homecoming Park. The defending boys individual champion is Wauseon’s Kyle Vernot, and the top returning girls finisher is Liberty Center’s Maddie Atkinson, who was runner-up last year.
