St. John's Jesuit senior basketball standout Vincent Williams has committed to play next year at Virginia Commonwealth University.

"I thought it was the best place for me, with the coaching staff, the playing style and the teammates that bonded with me," said Williams, who visited the Richmond, Va., campus last weekend."They sold me real well, and I enjoyed my time there with the players."

A 6-foot-5 guard-forward, Williams averaged 15.8 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists to leads the 25-3 Titans to the Division I regional finals last season. He was named first team All-Ohio as a junior, to the second team as a sophomore, and is a two-time All-Blade player of the year.

Williams said he chose VCU over the other his other final scholarship-offer considerations from Toledo, Wichita State, Richmond, Duquesne and Akron.

“I told him all along to go with whatever made him happy,” St. John’s coach Ed Heintschel said. “He went on three visits, and I told him, ‘I hope one of them just jumps out at you, and you have a moment of clarity.’

“I think he had that at VCU. He visited Duquesne and liked it. He visited Richmond and liked that. But, when he came back from VCU, he was like, ‘Wow. This is it.’ That’s a good thing.”

Williams said Rams head coach Mike Rhoades projects him as a combination shooting guard and small forward.

“I feel good right now,” Williams said of making his selection before the start of his senior season at St. John’s. “I’m releieved it’s over.

“This year [to prepare for next level] I’m going to have to shoot the ball more consistently, and become a better ball handler.”
