Toledo City Athletic League hall of fame adds 12

9 athletes, 2 coaches, 1 team to be inducted in November

Nine athletes, two coaches, and one honored team will be inducted into the 36th class of the Toledo City Athletic League’s hall of fame on Nov. 6.

Joining the hall as athletes will be former Major League pitcher Geoffery Zahn (DeVillbiss, Class of 1964; baseball, basketball); Tom Duncan (Bowsher, 1967; football, basketball, track), the late Farley Bell (DeVilbiss, 1975; football, basketball), Sandra Glover-Strothers (Scott, 1984; basketball, track, volleyball), Juilee Jeffries Vanhorse (Scott, 1985; basketball, track, volleyball), Joe Gajdostik (Cardinal Stritch, 1986; basketball, baseball, football, golf), Calvin Banks (St. Francis de Sales, 1987; football, basketball, track), Jessica Minnfield Lewis (Central Catholic, 2005; basketball), and Ellen Herman-Kimball (Central Catholic, 2006; volleyball, basketball).

The coaching inductees will be Robert Hayton, who was a longtime head track and cross country coach, serving at Scott, Libbey, DeVilbiss and Rogers during his career, and Jan Lehman, who coached volleyball at Central and Bowsher.

The honored team will be Central’s 2005 Division II state football championship team.

The hall of fame dinner and induction ceremony will be held at the Premier Banquet Center on Heatherdowns Boulevard in Toledo. Single tickets are $45, with tables of 10 available for $450. Those interested in attending can contact Lynn Moran at

Stritch hall of fame

Three athletes and a team will be included in the latest class of the Cardinal Stritch High School hall of fame in a ceremony on Dec. 2 at 5 p.m. at the school.

Entering as athletes will be Michael Manthey (Class of 1972; football, basketball), Jennifer LaPlante McDonald (1999; cross country, track, basketball), and Michael DeMaria (2000; football, track, wrestling). They will be joined by the 1970-71 girls basketball team.

Also inducted for their service to the Stritch community will be John (Jack) Haley, and Patrick Raglow.

Lay in Lax HOF

St. Ursula lacrosse coach Brad Lay was inducted into the North Coast chapter of the United States Lacrosse hall of fame for 2017 in a ceremony that took place on Sept. 15 in Cleveland.

Lay was honored for a combination of his college career as a player (at Ohio Wesleyan University) and his coaching service afterward, a total of 35 years in the sport.
