Drives in a run, scores the other in 2-1 win; Toledo finishes road trip 4-2

Toledo's Anthony Vasquez worked 8 strong innings Sunday in a 2-1 Mud Hens win over Norfolk. BLADE

NORFOLK, Va. — Jeimer Candelario accounted for both Toledo Mud Hens runs Sunday as they held off a late rally by the Norfolk Tides to win 2-1 at Harbor Park.

The Hens won two of three games in Norfolk and wrapped up a 4-2 road trip.

Anthony Vasquez allowed seven hits and a walk, striking out two, in eight innings to pick up the victory. Edward Mujica had a shaky ninth inning but finished for his 15th save.

Jim Adduci got the game-winning rally going in the bottom of the fifth with two outs with a walk. Candelario followed with a line-drive double to right field. Joey Rickard tried to gun down Adduci at the plate, but he was safe. Candelario advanced to third on the throw home, then scored as Stefan Crichton (6-1) unloaded a wild pitch.

Toledo’s Omar Infante, who doubled twice in four at-bats, got aboard in the seventh with two outs, but the rally was killed when Adduci flew out to left field.

Meanwhile, Vasquez (8-7) was having a relatively easy time. He had retired 12 consecutive batters heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, but the right-hander got into a bit of a jam.

Vasquez allowed singles to Mike Yastrzemski and Rickard to lead off the inning. However, he settled down and got Chris Johnson to fly out, Chris Dickerson to strike out and Pedro Alvarez to line out.

Norfolk had one more rally left in it in its half of the ninth against Mujica. Francisco Pena singled, Ruben Tejada walked and Drew Dosch singled to load the bases. Luis Sardinas then hit a ball to Infante at second, and he started a 4-6-3 double play that saw Pena score. Mujica then induced Yastrzemski to fly out to center to end the game.

Jason Krizan also had two hits, and Dominic Ficociello doubled as the Hens had eight hits in the game.

Toledo begins a seven-game homestand Monday as it will host Columbus for four of those games.

First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.
