Multiple news sources report that the New York Knicks have signed Whitmer High School graduate Nigel Hayes to a partially guaranteed contract.
The 6-foot-7 forward from Wisconsin averaged 5.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game for the Knicks in the Orlando Summer League after going undrafted.
Hayes averaged 14 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists as a senior for the Badgers, who went to the Sweet 16 in all four years he was on the team. Hayes also was a key contributor on the Wisconsin teams that went to back-to-back Final Fours in 2014 and 2015.
“It’s usually defense gets you on the court first,” Hayes said before the NBA draft, “then be able to make the smart play, the intelligent play, and that’s something I’ve always done.”
