Broke City League, school records in long jump

Bowsher's Bryce Mitchell, center, pulls ahead to win the 100-meter dash at the City League track and field meet. THE BLADE

In just his first year as a member of the track team, Mitchell broke his school’s long jump record that stood since 1989. His mark of 23 feet, 11¼ inches in the City League championship also broke the CL record of 23-7 set in 1996.

Mitchell has the longest jump in the state this year by more than a foot from the next closest competitor.

“It's pretty amazing, especially considering it's only his first year,” Bowsher head coach Keith Hershey said. “As an athlete, he has talent that is very rarely seen, maybe a couple times in a lifetime.”

Mitchell was named the outstanding field-event performer at the CL boys meet as he also claimed titles in the 100 and 200-meter events.

Mitchell, who will attend The University of Toledo on a football scholarship, also helped the boys basketball team win back-to-back City League titles as a three-sport athlete.
