Clay's defense keys victory over Springfield

WOODMORE 50, GIBSONBURG 38

The Wildcats took charge in the third quarter, outscoring the Golden Bears 10-2 to win the Division III sectional opener at Springfield.

Woodmore (15-8) advances to face Delta on Thursday. Kate Barbee scored a team-high 12 points and Lily Rothert chipped in with 10 for the Wildcats.

Abby Cantrell paced Gibsonburg (12-11) with 17 points and Shylee Schmeltz added 10.

CLAY 43, SPRINGFIELD 31

FOSTORIA — Clay’s defense held Springfield to only 31 points, and only two in the fourth quarter, to earn a sectional opener victory.

Hannah Jehany scored 16 and Sydney Hess scored 12 to lead Clay.

Springfield was led by Tia Crape, who scored 8.

WHITMER 60, MADISON 37

FOSTORIA — Whitmer had 11 different scorers contribute in its sectional semifinal victory over Madison.

Maddie Brown led the way with 11 points for the Panthers.

Brooklynn Arnold scored 15 to pace Madison.

EASTWOOD 44, GENOA 30

Jamie Schmeltz scored 18 points to lead Eastwood past Genoa in the sectional opener at Northview.

Eastwood advances to the sectional finals against Swanton at 1 p.m. Saturday at Northview.

Genoa was led by Sasha Roberts, who scored 12 points.

DELTA 55, ELMWOOD 44

Maddie Mattimore made five 3-pointers and scored 26 points to ensure her team advanced to the next round of the state tournament defeating Elmwood.

Abby Freeman also scored 15 points for the Panthers.

Elmwood was led by Zoe Shank who scored 20 points.

FINDLAY 50, ASHLAND 42

Allison Taylor tallied 15 points to lead the Trojans to the win in the Division I sectional semifinal at Start.

Jaclyn Bendt and Sam Shardo each scored 11 points for Findlay (12-11).

Alyssa Steury and Katie Kennedy each scored 12 points for Ashland.

NOTRE DAME 101, WAITE 33

Bre Hampton-Bey poured in a game-high 33 points for the Eagles in a Division I sectional opener at Start.

Mariah Copeland scored 22 points and Kaliah Johnson added 10 for Notre Dame (20-3), who had 12  players score points.

Mae Sanders paced Waite with 14 points.

CHELSEA 39, BEDFORD 26

CHELSEA, Mich. — Helena Schultz scored 12 points in a defensive struggle to lead Chelsea (14-5) past Bedford.

Lynsey Spotts paced the Kicking Mules (9-10) with 11 points.

TOLEDO CHRISTIAN 33, EMMANUEL CHRISTIAN 24

GENOA — The Eagles jumped out to a 16-8 lead at the half to win the Division IV sectional opener at Genoa.

Hannah McIntyre tallied eight points for Toledo Christian (12-11).

The Eagles advance to play Arcadia on Saturday.

Olivia Pollock paced Emmanuel Christian (7-14) with eight points.
