UT takes care of Ohio Dominican

The University of Toledo men's basketball team used a second-half run to pull away from Ohio Dominican and win 94-79 in an exhibition game Saturday at Savage Arena.

Senior guard Jonathan Williams came off the bench to lead the Rockets in scoring with 23 points. Jaelan Sanford added 16, Daniel Dzierzawski scored 13 and Nate Navigato had 11.

Zach Garber and Steve Taylor set the tone down low with 15 and 11 rebounds, respectively, to lead Toledo.

The Rockets trailed 50-47 with 16:23 left in the game, but a 37-16 run during the next 11 minutes gave them an 84-69 lead with 4:15 remaining and effectively put the game out for reach.

“We got a couple stops and scored in transition,” UT coach Tod Kowalczyk said. “That was really the key for us. But offensively right now, we’re not very good and defensively at the point guard position we need to do a better job of staying in front of people.”

Point guard Shemar Wuagh led the Panthers with 26 points, while Whitmer graduate Sam Hickey added 11 points with three 3-pointers.

The Rockets were in attack mode on offense, forcing 34 fouls on Ohio Dominican and shooting 32-of-47 at the free-throw line.

“We wanted to not settle and we wanted to get to the basket,” Williams said. “That’s the strength of our program. It was good that we got in the bonus early.”

Ten players scored for Toledo as the Rockets were trying to find lineup combinations that will benefit them in the regular season.

“Overall, I do think we learned some valuable lessons today,” Kowalczyk said. “We played a lot of guys a lot of minutes, which was good.”

NOTES: UT senior Jordan Lauf missed the game after Kowalczyk said he received an injection in his knee. Kowalczyk expects Lauf to practice Tuesday and be ready for the opener next Saturday at St. Joseph’s. ... Liberty-Benton graduate Adam Cytlak scored eight points for Ohio Dominican, while Southview graduate Ben Casanova grabbed two rebounds and did not score in 12 minutes.
