The Walleye have brought back Cody Lampl, a popular defenseman who had a career year with the team in 2012-13.

Lampl set career highs in goals (6), points (14), and penalty minutes (127) in 64 games two seasons ago with Toledo. The native of Ketchum, Idaho, played all of last season for the St. John's IceCaps of the American Hockey League.

Lampl, 28, has appeared in 214 ECHL games while playing for Toledo, Las Vegas, Idaho, and Utah. In those games, Lampl has racked up 322 penalty minutes and 58 points (8 goals, 50 assists).

Lampl had a goal and an assist in six playoff games for the Walleye in 2013. He also led the team with 127 penalty minutes and set a Walleye record by finishing that season with a plus-minus rating of plus-20.

Lampl signed with St. John's prior to last season and played in 38 games. He did not record a point but had 32 penalty minutes.

“When I took over as head coach, our vision was to build this group with a team-first mentality,” Walleye coach Derek Lalonde said. “Cody epitomizes this goal and is a very exciting signing for us.”

PLAYERS SELECTED: The organization also announced the five players who participated in last weekend's free agent camp who have been invited to the team's training camp in October.

Goaltender Justin Sands, of St. Clair Shores, Mich., is the only goalie who has been invited.

Forwards Mac McDonnell (Allen Park, Mich.) and Gehrett Sargis (Midlothian, Ill.) will join defensemen Mitch Stretch (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and Brad Denney (Fishers, Ind.) at the camp which starts on Oct. 2.
