The Toledo Walleye have brought back Cody Lampl, a defenseman who became a fan favorite in 2012-13.

Lampl set career highs in goals (six), points (14), and penalty minutes (127) in 64 games two seasons ago with Toledo. The native of Ketchum, Idaho played all of last season for the St. John's IceCaps of the American Hockey League.

Lampl, 28, has appeared in 214 ECHL games while playing for Toledo, Las Vegas, Idaho, and Utah. In those games, Lampl has racked up 322 penalty minutes and 58 points (8 goals and 50 assists).

Lampl, who sports a long black beard and a bevy of tattoos, had a goal and an assist in six playoff games for the Walleye in 20012-13. He also led the team with 127 penalty minutes and set a Walleye record by finishing that season with a plus/minus rating of plus-20.

Lampl signed with St. John's prior to last season and played in 38 games. He did not record a point but had 32 penalty minutes.

Last November, the team produced a Cody Lampl bobble head, that included his big beard and a street lamp.

“When I took over as head coach, our vision was to build this group with a team-first mentality,” Walleye coach Derek Lalonde said. “Cody epitomizes this goal and is a very exciting signing for us.”
