Cheatham Norrils, who was projected to be the University of Toledo’s starting cornerback, is out indefinitely with an illness, athletics director for communications Paul Helgren said Tuesday.

Norrils, a St. John’s Jesuit graduate, is not allowed to practice or lift weights, and he has lost a significant amount of weight, Helgren said. In the meantime, Norrils is allowed to watch film and attend team meetings.

Though Norrils has been feeling better, Helgren said the team has “no idea” when or if Norrils will be able to return.

“It’s a wait-and-see thing,” Helgren said.

UT coach Matt Campbell did not address the media on Norrils’ condition.

Norrils, a senior, was named All-Mid-American Conference third team in 2012 and has started in 24 of Toledo’s past 25 games. He has been one of UT’s more consistent players during his career, and he has developed a reputation as a run-stopping corner.

He has made 133 tackles and three interceptions in his career, and he was projected to be the Rockets’ top cornerback this year.

Norrils was a standout at St. John’s.

As a senior, he was named The Blade’s player of the year in 2010 and was selected All-Ohio first team as a wide receiver.

FAN APPRECIATION: The UT football team will hold its Fan Appreciation Day on Saturday at the Glass Bowl. Fans are invited at 4:30 p.m. to watch the final hour of a practice session.

The first 1,000 fans to arrive will receive a free poster.

After the practice, approximately 5:30 p.m., fans can meet players and coaches for an autograph session under the west-side grandstands.

50/50 ONLINE: UT’s 50/50 raffle will be done electronically for football and basketball games beginning this season.

Pointstreak 5050 partnered with the school, and the service will allow tickets to be sold digitally and allow fans to keep up with the drawing in real time.
