Pitching paces Hens in win

INDIANAPOLIS — For the second straight day the Mud Hens got a strong pitching performance to beat Indianapolis.

Robbie Ray and two Toledo relievers limited the Indians to four hits in a 4-1 victory Monday at Victory Field.

Toledo broke on top with three runs in the third inning off Indians starter Nick Kingham. Wade Gaynor led off with a walk, then scored from first on a double by Danny Worth down the right-field line.

Worth moved to third on a one-out groundout by Jordan Lennerton, then came home on a single by James McCann. Mike Hessman walked to move McCann to second, and a single by Tyler Collins plated McCann.

The Mud Hens added a run in the fourth when Ben Guez opened the inning with a home run to straight-away center, his 14th home run of the season.

Indianapolis scored its only run in the fifth when Chase d’Arnaud led off with a double, stole third, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Robert Andino.

But Ray pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the second, then kept the Indians off the board in the seventh after d’Arnaud led off with a triple. Ray got the next three batters out on infield popups to improve to 7-5 on the season.

Ray allowed just one run on four hits in seven innings. He struck out three and walked four.

Kingham suffered the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in six innings.

Justin Miller got a double play to retire Indianapolis in the eighth, and Kevin Whelan pitched around a walk to finish off the ninth and earn his International League-leading 20th save.

McCann had three of Toledo’s nine hits, while Collins finished with two.

The Mud Hens finish their four-game series in Indianapolis at 7:05 today, then have Wednesday off before beginning a 10-game, 11-day homestand Thursday with the first of four contests against Lehigh Valley.
