Mud Hens split series with Durham

DURHAM — The Mud Hens fell behind early against Durham and despite a late rally, were not able to claw their way back in a 5-2 loss on Monday.

The loss was Toledo’s second straight to the Bulls and gave the teams a split in their four-game series.

Durham’s Justin Christian led off the bottom of the first with a double to left and scored on Wilson Betemit’s single, giving the Bulls an early lead.

Durham added to its advantage with a pair of runs in the second. Ali Solis hit a two-run homer, scoring Vince Belnome.

Things got even worse for Toledo in the seventh after Mikie Mahtook lined a single to left field, scoring Christian, giving Durham a 4-0 edge.

Toledo finally broke through on the scoreboard in the eighth, plating a pair of runs. Tyler Collins led off the inning with a single and then scored on Ben Guez’s double to center field. Daniel Fields followed by ripping a triple to right field, which sent Guez across home.

Yet, Durham got one of those runs back in the bottom of the eighth as Betemit cracked a solo home run.

Durham pitcher Nate Karns (8-5) earned the win, going seven innings. He struck out two and gave up four hits, two runs, and two walks.

Duane Below (8-5) took the loss. He went six innings and gave up eight hits, three runs (two earned), two walks, and struck out two.
