The Marathon Classic — like the Jamie Farr Classic before it — is in the business of raising money for children’s charities in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. Tournament officials have handed out checks totaling $8.1 million dollars to more than 100 charities since the event’s inception in 1984.

NASCAR legend Richard Petty, who has long had a sponsorship tie-in with Marathon Petroleum, will be a special guest during Thursday’s first round of the Marathon Classic at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania. Petty‘s visit is just one of several events going on during the week of the tournament.
When the Jamie Farr Classic transitioned to the Marathon Classic last year, it was a break from a proud association between one of Toledo’s favorite sons and the LPGA tournament stop that bore his name for 27 years at Highland Meadows Golf Club.
One year later, the new title sponsor has settled in and is preparing to add some new wrinkles to the annual midsummer event in Sylvania.

Carol Gibbs was first introduced to what is now called the Marathon Classic in 1988. She liked what she saw and has been a volunteer serving in multiple capacities since 1990.
The reasons she has kept coming back year after year are pretty simple: The volunteer staff has become like another family to her, and she has seen first hand the major benefit this LPGA event provides to local charities each year.
“You have to give back,” said Gibbs, who this year is serving as Volunteer Tournament Chairman. “A lot of us have a lot of blessings that we don’t take into consideration. Others don’t have those blessings. We’re helping out.”
