Mud Hens split a pair against Gwinnett

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — A five-run ninth inning, spurred by a grand slam off the bat of Ben Guez, rallied the Mud Hens past host Gwinnett to a 7-5 win on Wednesday.

It was the first game of a doubleheader concluded a suspended contest that began Tuesday night.

In the seven-inning nightcap, the Braves won 7-1 as Guez homered again.

Manny Pina led off the top of the ninth in the first game with a line-drive single to left. It was followed by a walk to Trevor Crowe and Jordan Lennerton to load the bases.

After Lennerton was substituted to run by Ezequiel Carrera, guez blasted the homer to left. Brandon Douglas added a solo shot to give Toledo a 7-4 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Kyle Lobstein pitched seven innings, taking over from original starter Duane Below after the game was suspended after the first inning on Tuesday.

Lobstein allowed nine hits and three earned runs while striking out one and walking one.

Kevin Whelan got his 13th save of the year, giving up one run in the final frame.

Pina, Douglas, and Hernan Perez each had two hits in the win.

In the nightcap, Gwinnett scored three runs in the third off Toledo starter Mike Belfiore to chase him from the mound while the Braves poured it on with three more in the fourth to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

Recently aquired lefty Daniel Schlereth allowed three runs, one earned in two-thirds innings pitched.

Gwinnett’s Cody Martin pitched a complete seven-inning game three-hitter, allowing hits to Toledo’s Carerra, Perez, and Guez.
