COLUMBUS — J.D. Martinez hit three home runs in the first game and added another in the nightcap as the Mud Hens swept a doubleheader Saturday from the Columbus Clippers.
Toledo won the first game 8-1, then won the second game 7-6.
In Game 1, Martinez homered in his first three at-bats: a two-run shot in the first inning, a lead-off drive in the third, and another two-run home run in the fifth.
Ezequiel Carrera’s three-run homer in the second inning staked Toledo (7-10) to a 5-0 lead.
Duane Below won for the second time this season, starting the game and going five innings, striking out and walking four apiece while allowing five hits and one earned run. Blaine Hardy closed for Toledo and didn’t allow a run while giving up one hit and striking out one.
Hernan Perez was 3-for-4 with a double in the win.
For Columbus (5-10), Carlos Moncrief doubled and Matt Carson drove in the only run for the Clippers.
Tyler Cloyd fell to 1-2 this season after allowing nine hits and eight earned runs in five innings. He struck out four and walked one.
In Game 2, Martinez, who is batting .308, clobbered his fourth homer of the day and 10th of the season when he connected on a Toru Murata pitch with a runner on base in the first inning to give the Hens a 2-0 lead.
But the Clippers came right back in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score at 2.
Columbus scored a run in the third to go up 3-2 before Toledo’s Tyler Collins tied the score with a solo homer, which was his first of the season.
After the Clippers rallied for two runs in the bottom half of the fourth to go up 5-3, the Mud Hens rallied for three in the fifth to regain the lead. Toledo added another run in the sixth and led 7-5.
Melvin Mercedes closed out the game on the mound for the Hens to earn a save. He pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit — a solo homer by Jesus Aguilar in the seventh. Jhan Marinez (1-1) earned the decision in relief by pitching 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits while walking two and fanning one.
Toledo lead-off hitter Carrera Ezequiel went 3-for-4 and scored twice while Hernan Perez and Collins added two hits apiece for the Mud Hens.
Martinez went 1-for-2 and was walked twice in the second game. His two-run homer in the opening frame gives him 22 RBIs this season.
Aguilar had two hits and two RBI to lead the Clippers. Tim Fedroff also had two hits, including a double.
The Clippers’ Vinnie Pestano (0-1) suffered the loss in relief after lasting one inning, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three and walking one.
Clippers starter Murata lasted 3 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits while fanning two.
