VIERA, Fla. — Detroit Tigers shortstop Julio Iglesias will start the season on the disabled list and is scheduled to visit a specialist in Colorado on Tuesday.
Iglesias has been experiencing pain in both of his shins when he runs, particularly when he slows down. General manager Dave Dombrowski says Iglesias will visit Dr. Thomas Clanton of the Steadman Clinic.
Dombrowski says Sunday there is no telling how long Iglesias could be sidelined until he is examined by Dr. Clanton.
Dombrowski says: “It’s apparent something’s wrong. But I don’t want to speculate on what it is. We’ll let (the doctors) define it.”
The Tigers plan to look three internal candidates to fill the shortstop spot: Eugenio Suarez, Hernan Perez and Danny Worth. Dombrowski says defensive ability will be a priority.
