CLEVELAND — The University of Toledo women's basketball team avenged two regular season losses to Western Michigan today, topping the Broncos 72-61 to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Mid-American Conference tournament.
UT, which got 21 points from Ana Capotosto, will face third-seed Akron at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Quicken Loans Arena. The Zips handed UT a 20-point loss on Jan. 30 at Savage Arena.
The winner of the UT-Akron match up will advance to the semifinals to play a suddenly vulnerable Central Michigan team. Less than an hour after being named MAC player of the year on Tuesday, Crystal Bradford sustained a knee injury at practice that will keep her out of the tournament. Bradford is also the defensive player of the year.
Capotosto made her first seven shots from the field. She finished 8 of 10 and 5 of 6 on 3-pointers.
UT led by as many as 18 points in the second half.
