Red Wings fall to Avalanche, 3-2

DETROIT - On the night that Nicklas Lidstrom's uniform number was retired, Andre Benoit's goal with 31.4 seconds left in overtime helped the Colorado Avalanche hand the Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 loss tonight at Joe Louis Arena.

Niklas Kronwall gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 12:33 of the first, and Matt Duchene tied it for Colorado midway through the second.

Tomas Jurco's power-play goal two minutes after Duchene's goal gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead, but P.A. Parenteau tied the game for Colorado at 2-2 at 5:49 of the third.

Jimmy Howard made 22 saves for Detroit, and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 35 saves for Colorado.
