Senior bounces back from back injury

Clay's DeMeo places at state gymnastics

HILLIARD, Ohio — Her last high school gymnastics meet Saturday was full of retribution and the unexpected for Clay senior Jody DeMeo.

Because she had much of her season a year ago wiped out because of a stress fracture in her back, DeMeo couldn’t have been more excited to compete at the individual state meet at Hilliard Bradley.

Adding a memory to the occasion for DeMeo is that she was one of four gymnasts to score 9.05 and tie for sixth on beam as the top six earned a spot on the awards podium.

“It’s amazing because I really wasn’t expecting it,” DeMeo said. “I’ve gotten an All-Ohio award before but I’ve never gotten on the podium. Getting sixth in my senior year is awesome.

“I got to do [beam] last, so it was actually my last high school event. Because it’s always been my strongest event, I was happy it was my last event. Knowing it’s your last year, you want to put it all out there.”

Leading the area in the all-around competition was Liberty Center senior Cheyenne Rentschler, who scored 35.7 to place 13th.

Also in the all-around were DeMeo (34.3425), Findlay junior Tori Cox (34.95), and Springfield freshman Kaylynn Frantz (32.825).

Brecksville-Broadview Heights’ Alecia Farina was first in the all-around (38.325).

Rentschler scored 9.35 on vault and 9.125 on floor.

“I’ve been working on my vault the most,” Rentschler said. “I wasn’t landing any in warmups so I finally landed it. It felt good.”

Frantz scored 8.6 on beam and 8.25 on floor for her best scores.

Also competing for Springfield was Frantz’s sister, junior Cassandra Frantz.

“[Kaylynn] is only a freshman so she’ll get to come back next year,” coach Jessie Hodulik said.

Cox scored 8.95 on floor, 8.875 on beam, and 8.7 on bars.

“I did pretty well,” Cox said. “I fell [during the team competition Friday] on floor and didn’t fall or anything today. It’s a lot of fun being here. It’s definitely a new experience coming from club.”

Also competing on vault were Clay’s Amtheyst Floyd (8.875) and Findlay’s Maranda Butler (8.75). On bars, Floyd scored 8.625, and Findlay’s Cassidy Pruitt had an 8.475.

Northview’s Katelyn McKown scored 8.8 on beam.
