Perrysburg girls team in the huddle.
FOSTORIA — The Perrysburg girls basketball team defeated Lima Senior in a Division I district semifinal rematch 66-48 Thursday night behind 21 points from senior Sarah Baer.
Baer made her first four shots of the fourth quarter to spark a 12-2 Perrysburg run putting, the game out of reach. Junior Kayla Piezer had two fastbreak layups during the run.
"I think the fatigue got to them," Perrysburg coach Todd Sims said. "When you’re not making shots, you feel more tired. We ran the court well."
Perrysburg defeated Lima Senior 79-64 in last year's district semifinal.
Lima Senior gave up its 28-26 halftime lead by shooting 4-of-18 in the third quarter. Senior Indiya Benjamin scored 20 points to keep Lima Senior in the game. Half of the Spartans’ buckets in the third came from sophomore Essence Cowan's two 3-pointers, which kept Perrysburg from pulling away sooner.
The Yellow Jackets (22-3) will play Notre Dame Academy, which beat Northview, in the district final at Lake High School at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Notre Dame beat Perrysburg earlier this season.
"They're really good. It will be fun," Sims said. "We'll have to make shots we don't normally make. They will be on their game, and so will we."
A buzzer-beating layup by Piezer pulled Perrysburg to within two at the half. Lima Senior took its two-point edge with Benjamin leading all scorers with 12 points at the break.
Benjamin had a 4-0 run herself after a layup, quick steal off the inbounds pass, and ensuing layup. That began a 12-1 run by Lima Senior in the second quarter, which included a 3-pointer from Caterrion Thompson, and three-point play from Benjamin.
Piezer helped Perrysburg end the run making a layup after the Yellow Jackets broke the full-court press. Baer then scored two of her eight first-half points on the next possession. Baer also had 10 rebounds in the first half.
"She's a really, really good player," Sims said about Baer. "What she did tonight wasn't a fluke. She is a very good athlete and improved shooter."
Sims said when junior Allex Brown, who scored 15, got going in the second half it is tough to stop her and Baer.
That tandem had 10 points in the third quarter when Perrysburg took the lead.
Senior Abby Sattler opened the game for Perrysburg with a 3-pointer on the first possession. She finished with eight points. Sophomore Taylin Hunter had five, and senior Kelsey Moore had four.
Lima Senior forced several first-half turnovers, but Perrysburg was more careful with the ball in the second half.
"It was very frustrating at first, but we pulled it together," Baer said. "We can't afford that in a game like this."
Cowan had 15 for Lima Senior, and Thompson had 7.
"It was a huge win. Lima Senior is a great team," Baer said. "At the end we really stepped up and were running the floor and getting fast breaks."
